Stripe vs PayPal Cross-Border Fees: Verify Costs for Your Market

Correction (2 October 2026): The earlier article said Stripe often wins on fee visibility and currency control while PayPal often wins on shopper familiarity and conversion. It did not define a merchant country, customer market, transaction mix, contract, observation date or measured checkout outcomes. Those comparative winner claims are withdrawn. This page does not establish that either provider is cheaper, faster or better for a particular business.

Compare the same transaction in the same market

Start with the merchant account country, the buyer’s country, payment method, transaction amount and currency. For each provider, record the dated processing charge, cross-border surcharge, currency-conversion rate or fee, refund and dispute terms, and payout method. Distinguish the currency a customer sees from the currency a merchant receives. A fee page for one country should not be applied to another.

Use the provider’s current local terms: Stripe pricing and PayPal’s US merchant-fee page are starting points, but the PayPal link is specifically for US accounts. Stripe’s currency documentation explains that presentment and settlement currencies can differ. Follow the country selector or account-specific terms before calculating a total. Terms can change, and custom contracts may differ from public rates.

Settlement and feature checks

Ask each provider which payout methods and settlement currencies are available for the actual account and bank. Record the stated payout schedule separately from the bank’s arrival time, and include weekends, holds and review periods. Supported currencies and methods also depend on region and account eligibility. A small test transaction can check the configured flow; it is not evidence of a universal fee or conversion advantage.

Evidence status: No market-specific net-cost comparison or controlled checkout conversion study was available for the earlier winner claims. Actual fees, availability and settlement for a named business remain Needs editor verification.
