Spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of Cruel Summer.

Summer is here and a new secret too.

OK, summer didn’t really hit television until Freeform’s new drama Cruel Summer, but we stand by the mysterious part. Set over three different summers in the mid-90s, the teen drama is about finding out what happened after the pretty and popular Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) mysteriously disappeared and appeared in the high school food chain by former nerd Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia).

Over the course of the first episode and three different years, we’ve seen Jeanette go from being a nerdy wannabe to Kate Wallis 2.0, then to a recluse who hates the world and who the world hates again.

By the end of that first lesson, Kate had been rescued from the new deputy headmaster’s basement and claimed that Jeanette had seen where she was being held and had done nothing about it. At the end of the second hour of the premiere, Jeanette sued Kate, swearing that nothing like that had happened. But who do we believe?
