Rita Moreno got a lot of her chest to surround the backlash Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s movie In the Heights.
The 89-year-old acting legend from Puerto Rico was on Tuesday, November 15th. Stephen Colbert asked her if she ever struggled to be an icon for her community and she said she never did. However, this led the star to address a related topic that seemed to weigh on them, namely the recent criticism of the lack of Afro-Latinx cast members for In the Heights.
“Can we talk about this criticism of Lin-Manuel for a second? That really upsets me,” said the One Day at a Time star. “You can never get it right, it seems. This is the man who literally brought being Latino and Puerto Rican to America. I could not do it. I would like to say I did, but I couldn’t. “
She continued, “Lin-Manuel really did it single-handedly, and I’m absolutely thrilled and proud that he produced my documentary.” Rita was referring to Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It, a documentary about her life due out later this month that counts the Hamilton mastermind as the executive producer.
