Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
On Thursday June 17th, a spokeswoman for the 23-year-old tennis phenomenon announced her decision to withdraw from the acclaimed tournament set to begin June 28th in London.
“Naomi won’t play at Wimbledon this year,” the statement said. “She takes some personal time with friends and family.”
However, she doesn’t hang up her racket all summer. Today’s announcement said Naomi “will be ready for the Olympics and looks forward to playing in front of her home fans.”
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic, will begin on July 23.
The four-time Grand Slam champion recently made headlines when she retired from the 2021 French Open after imposing a $ 15,000 fine for skipping a mandatory press conference. At the time, Osaka said she would not speak to the media out of concern for her mental health.
