Major League Baseball will hold its all-star game at Coors Field in Denver in 2021, the league announced on Tuesday.
MLB announced the just change days after Atlanta’s game was relocated due to a controversial electoral law passed by Georgia state officials. MLB rejected the bill, which critics say aims to suppress voices among people of color in underserved areas.
MLB selected Denver as the official in town and previously presented a plan to host the game at a later date. The last time Denver hosted the midsummer classic of baseball was in 1998. According to the baseball almanac, the event raised over $ 40 million for the region.
“Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rocky Mountains, the city of Denver and the state of Colorado for supporting the All-Star Game this summer,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in a statement. “We appreciate their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating the best players in our sport and entertaining fans around the world.”
MLB was canceled by politicians for relocating the game and also by the Braves, owned by Liberty Media Corp. are criticized. An official with Cobb Travel and Tourism in Georgia told CNN that the state could suffer an economic loss of over $ 100 million for the move.
“The more than 8,000 MLB contracted hotel nights that are not realized due to the MLB All-Star Game move will adversely affect the Cobb hospitality industry and other local businesses and further delay recovery,” said Holly Quinlan, CEO by company, according to the network.
The 2019 All-Star Contest was estimated to raise Cleveland more than $ 60 million, and the 2020 event should raise Los Angeles around $ 89 million. Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles will host the All-Star game in 2022 after missing out on 2020 due to the pandemic.
