Thousands of athletes compete in the Olympics, but spectators have limited time each day.

After all, there are 33 sporting events and more than 10,000 athletes competing in the Tokyo 2020 Games. Some of these people are well known in their respective fields while others are absolute newbies to the games.

Then there are the 206 countries to keep up with, including the IOC Refugee Olympic Team and the Russian Olympic Committee (Russia was banned from the Games because of a doping scandal).

Fortunately, E! News has compiled a list of 12 athletes competing for teams outside the United States who are expected to make history at the Games. For example, the fastest woman alive will compete in the 100m run and the first two openly transgender athletes will pave a way for the LGBTQ community as they represent their respective countries.
