Facebook will set up a product team to work on the “Metaverse”, a concept in which digital worlds are created in which several people can live at the same time.

The Metaverse team will be part of Facebook’s virtual reality group, Reality Labs, Executive Andrew Bosworth said in a Facebook post on Monday.

“Today, the Portal and Oculus can teleport you into a room with another person or into new virtual worlds and experiences regardless of physical distance,” wrote Bosworth. “But to achieve our full vision of the metaverse, we also need to build the connective tissue between these spaces – so that you can break the limitations of physics and move between them with the same ease as you would when moving from one room in your home to the next.”

Vishal Shah, the product executive at Instagram, is one of those joining Facebook’s new Metaverse group.

Technology companies and executives are increasingly discussing the development of a “metaverse” as a successor technology for smartphones and the mobile Internet. In general, technologists view a metaverse as a virtual world in which large numbers of people can gather to play, work, and socialize.

The metaverse is closely related to virtual reality and augmented reality technologies that are currently being developed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft alongside Facebook. Roblox, a game for children whose parent company is valued at over $ 44 billion, is often viewed as an example of a metaverse.

Facebook is investing heavily in AR and VR technologies because they offer the company the ability to control its own hardware platform in the event of a withdrawal, instead of being controlled by rules that Apple and Google set in their app stores.

In an interview with The Verge published early last week, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg said the company’s own metaverse would work on virtual reality headsets, as well as on mobile devices and game consoles.

“And my hope, if we do this well, I think in the next five years or so in this next chapter of our business we will effectively move from the people who see us primarily as social media companies to a metaverse will be passed over. ” Company, “Zuckerberg said in an interview.
